Daraga town fiesta’s military parade competition awards Mariners with top honors

Daraga, Albay – The contingent of Mariners Polytechnic Colleges Foundation (MPCF) Legazpi City composed of Coast Guard Auxiliary-Officer Training Corps (CGA-OTC) cadets joined the 2015 annual Fiesta Military parade challenge held on September 7, 2015 in celebration of the town’s ‘Pintakasi’.

Aside from the Mariners school, participating components from the Bicol College, Bicol University and Tabaco College joined the street marching encounter.

After the parade which started from the Bicol University campus and ended at the Rizal Park in Daraga, Albay, the verdict of the Board of judges was announced.

MPCF bagged the over all honors after getting the following awards:

  • Best in Marching
  • Best Model Platoon
  • Best Company Commander.


The school’s CGA-OTC Unit has been consistent in garnering prizes both in local and regional marching competitions, including the coveted Penafrancia Festival awards given every 2nd week of September on the occasiobn of the Feast of Our Lady of Penafrancia, the Patroness of Bicolandia.

When asked on the secret of the winning streak of Mariners, CGA-OTC Commandant Captain Steven James Dino said “There is no other way towards success except by way of hard work, positive outlook and discipline. We train our cadets hard and we see to it that they develop a passion for excellence and leave mediocrity behind as a way of doing any task at hand”.

Buwan ng Wika highlights colorful campus activities at MPCF-Legazpi

– The Mariners Polytechnic Colleges Foundation (MPCF) this city thru the students taking-up Pilipino subjects have organized various activities to highlight the celebration of ‘Buwan ng Wika’. It adopted the theme ‘Filipino: Wika ng Pambansang Kaunlaran’.


School officials sit as members of the Board of Judges in various contests organized in the campus as part of the ‘Buwan ng Wika’ celebration led by Human Resource Director Ms. Lydia Cervantes (extreme right).

Included in the contests conducted on August 26, 2015 were Essay Writing, Poster Making, Slogan Making, Extemporaneous Speaking, Folk and Modern Dancing. The month-long celebration in August has given importance to Pilipino as the country’s national language.

Historically, the National Language celebration in the country was formalized thru Proclamation 1041 which mandates that a month-long celebration be made.

It was signed by former President Fidel Ramos in 1997 which sets a Buwan ng Wika celebration every month of August. This celebration coincides with the birth anniversary of former President Manuel Quezon, known as Ama ng Wikang Pambansa or Father of National Language, who was born on August 19, 1878.

In 1988, President Corazon Aquino signed Proclamation 19, which ratified the celebration of the Linggo ng Wika every August 13 to 19. The week-long celebration was observed until Ramos extended it to a month starting 1997.

  • Paggawa ng Islogan (Slogan Making)

    • 1st – Marvin R. Azuela (MT 2a8)
    • 2nd – Glenn O. Belmonte (HRM 1a6)
    • 3rd – Jasmin Mae L. Gedoria (HRM 1a8)

  • Talumpating di-pinaghandaan (Extemporaneous Speaking)

“The Buwan ng Wika celebration is important as part of the effort of the school to conserve our National Language and help in the preservation of our national identity as Filipinos. It will help in inculcating in the minds of our students to be proud of Pilipino as our national language”, said MPCF-Human Resource Director Ms. Lydia Cervantes who was guest of honor of the students during the occasion.
