The course prepares students as licensed marine engineering officers and engineering positions in associated shipping and shore side industries. It includes internal and external combustion engines, electricity and electronics, auxiliary and main propulsion machinery and the organization and operation of merchant vessels engineering plants. It also includes student's study of preventive maintenance and gain practical experience aboard ship in port and on the high seas.

The B.S. Marine Engineering (BSMarE) course covers a three-year academic stay at Mariners’ plus a one-year training as an apprentice onboard sea-going vessels.

It includes lectures and trainings in internal combustion engines, steam engineering, marine refrigeration and electricity, and general education. Practical studies involve hands-on exercise in engine simulation, dockyard visitation, and shipboard familiarization

The department is nestled at the MBR campus fronting the scenic Albay Gulf.  It houses varied equipment ranging from steam boilers, electrical switchboard, engine models, and machine shop equipment such as lathe machines, shaper, and milling machine.

The training and instruction are focused on engine operation as well as repair and maintenance which is the primary function of the engineering department on-board ships.

Now full ahead to brighter horizons…  Soaring for greater heights!

Marine Engineering: A Course to Beat

Engine is the heart of the ship. It supplies power and electricity in a vessel to help it navigate oceans and cross seas to meet the desired destination. That is why best ships need quality maintenance and care in the engine room to maintain its good quality and excellent performance. Highly competitive engineers and equipped seafarers who are manning it are in charge of taking good care of the vessel.

There is always a big trend and high demand for competitive workers on-board ship. Thus, most of the maritime institutions train their cadets very well to develop and mold them into competitive workers who can meet the international standards set by the ship owners and principals.

The Mariner’s Polytechnic Colleges Foundation, Rawis, Legazpi City (MPCF-LC), is one of the best performing Maritime schools in the country and it always hits a high note in producing quality graduates who are morally upright, goal-oriented, equipped with the necessary skills, and competitive in accomplishing assigned tasks. Through the state-of-the-art teaching, seminars, workshops and programs offered by the school, the students’ proficiency is developed. In addition the students acquire vital learning that they may use as future leaders in the maritime profession.

Here are the learning opportunities provided for maritime students to ensure their preparedness after completing their course.

DOCKYARD TOUR FAMILIARIZATION

This is designed for the students to learn and be familiar with the technical terms used in the maritime field, acquire the method used in creating and maintaining the good quality of the ship, and in knowing how the machines present at the dockyard operate. Moreover, it also deals with the proper handling and keeping the good quality of the auxiliaries.

ENGINE SIMULATORS
Students are trained to handle actual marine diesel engines and emergency situations, and follow standard procedures. They are taught marine engine operation and maintenance in order to gain an in-depth understanding of how the machines in the vessels work. They are also trained to troubleshoot engine problems as they arise.

ELECTRICAL WORKS
Students learn the proper electrical distribution and electrical wiring and circuits on-board. Hands-on activities help them build wiring system and analyze complicated electrical works which are necessary for Marine Engineering students who will be assessing the sea-worthiness of the ship. They are also taught how to diagnose electric problems.

PROPER HANDLING OF ENGINES AND AUXILIARIES

Marine engineering students here in MPCF – LC are taught methodically in the proper use and handling of machines and auxiliaries such as purifier, diesel engines lathe machines, and many more. They gain quality education and learning from the method of teaching of instructors. Mechanical principles are explained methodically; hence, the students get motivated to work hard as they can. Techniques are also taught very well for them to accomplish their job easily.

FUNDAMENTALS OF HOT WORKS

Students are trained to be familiar with the fundamentals of hot works such as welding (arc and gas welding), forging, machine shops, and construction. It enables them to be competitive and capable of performing their tasks. They are also trained to operate equipment, in handling storage materials, and in using personal protective gears.
