On November 6, 2024, Mariners’ Legazpi welcomed the Asia Foundation Team, as part of the school’s initiative to showcase its commitment to sustainable maritime education and blue economy principles in the Bicol region. The program allowed the Asia Foundation representatives to learn more about the institution’s contributions to maritime education and community outreach.

Ms. Merle Jimenez-San Pedro, President of Mariners’ Legazpi and President of the Women in Maritime Asia (WIMA Asia) and Women in Maritime Philippines (WIMA Philippines), opened the event with a welcome message. She emphasized Mariners’ dedication to promoting sustainable development through maritime education and expressed her gratitude for the Asia Foundation’s partnership.

BREAKTHROUGH VICTORY: MPCF-LC Students Advances to Regional Statistics Quiz

 

Students from Mariners Polytechnic Colleges Foundation-Legazpi City (MPCF-LC) secured top spots in the 28th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PS Quiz) Provincial Eliminations conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) on November 5, 2024. MPCF-LC emerged as the highest-ranking institution among participating colleges and universities in Albay.

Thomas Jefferson Borromeo, a 1st-year Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering (BSMarE) student, earned 3rd place in the competition, qualifying for the Regional Round set to take place on November 8, 2024, at the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) office in Legazpi City. Joining him are James Joshua Locaba, a 1st-year Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation (BSMT) student, who placed 4th, and John Lloyd Ira, also a 1st-year BSMarE student, who secured 6th place.

On July 26, 2024, Mariners' Polytechnic Colleges of Legazpi City (MPCF-LC) marked a significant milestone with the 38th Commencement Exercise and Ring-Hop Ceremony of the College of Maritime Education for the Class of 2024, known as "Batch Dagisik", the event was held at the JCJ Gymnasium.

The ceremony commenced with President Merle Jimenez-San Pedro delivering her inspiring President’s Address, reflecting on the journey of perseverance and commitment required to overcome life's challenges. Following her address, the newly seated Dean of Maritime Studies, Dante C. Bo, MM, PhD, presented the Maritime Program Graduates and the newly licensed Maritime Officers. This was followed by President Jimenez-San Pedro’s formal recognition and affirmation of the graduates.

Ensuring Excellence: CHED and MARINA Audit at MPCF-LC

 

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) conducted its audit and monitoring visit to Mariners' Polytechnic Colleges Foundation Legazpi City (MPCF-LC) from June 18 to June 21, 2024. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to ensure the quality and compliance of maritime education institutions in the country.

The audit, led by a joint team of CHED and MARINA officials, aimed to assess the institution’s adherence to the standards set for maritime education. This included a review of the college’s facilities, curriculum, faculty qualifications, and student services. The team also examined the effectiveness of the college’s quality assurance processes and its compliance with international maritime education standards.

MARINERS' LEAZPI: SPORTSFEST 2024

 

Mariner's Legazpi commenced its Sports Fest 2024 with a grand opening ceremony on 04 June 2024. Students, faculty, and staff gathered early in the morning for the flag ceremony, marking the official start of this much anticipated event.

A highlight of the opening ceremony was the hoisting of team flags by each team's muses and escorts. The Blue Team emerged victorious in this race. Ms. Merle Jimenez-San Pedro, President of Mariner's Legazpi, followed with a special message to formally open the event. Her speech emphasized the importance of camaraderie, sportsmanship, and the joy of competition.

The Core Task Force of the Blue Economy convened on 03 June 2024 at the AV Hall of Mariner's Legazpi Main Campus, Rawis Legazpi City, in a meeting led by Syntegral Global Solutions and Mariner's Legazpi. This event marks a crucial step towards the promotion and development of the Blue Economy in the Bicol Region.

Emphasizing the region's potential, she remarked, "Why do this elsewhere, if we can do it here (in the Bicol Region)?" Mariners' Polytechnic Colleges Foundation Legazpi City continues to stand against the Chapter XVIII of the Consolidated Bills on the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers on 25 March 2024 at the MPCF-LC Grounds in Legazpi City. Faculty, staff, and students gather in unity in black shirts with messages denouncing Chapter XVIII and championing seafarers' rights preservation.



With the imminent deadline for PBBM's signature on the Magna Carta, the institution remains committed to advocating for Filipino seafarers' rights and reinforces its stance that maritime students should not be classified as seafarers. In the face of these challenges, their collective voice stands to emphasize the significance of fair treatment for seafarers across the nation and calls for reform for better maritime education and training.

Equal opportunities emphasize the importance of gender equality most especially for women, affecting the nation’s progress and higher growth development in the maritime industry.
On 18 May 2023, twenty-four (24) empowered and astonishing women in the maritime sector graced the International Day for Women in Maritime (IDWM) held at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Headquarters - Meeting Hall in London. Guided by this year’s theme “Mobilizing Networks for Gender Equality”, the event aims to highlight the importance of utilizing interpersonal and organizational networks in overcoming obstacles to women's participation in the maritime profession. Additionally, this program was also linked to the United Nations (UN) SDG 5 on Gender Equality.

[REPOST] Highlighting gender equality in maritime

THE importance of collaboration and networking in achieving gender equality in the maritime sector took center stage at the Global Conference of the IMO Women in Maritime Associations held at the IMO Headquarters in London on May 18-19.

The need to tackle the lack of visibility of women in the maritime industry; the need for individual women and organizations representing them to work in partnership to achieve more; the importance of having men as allies; and the need to engage with girls during their school years to attract them into roles in maritime were issues raised repeatedly.

Members of the IMO's eight Women in Maritime Associations (WIMAs) from around the world and international partner organizations came together to explore the theme of this year's International Day for Women in Maritime held on May 18 — "Mobilizing networks for gender equality."
