Marlow Navigation’s Riina Vaher topbills MPCF-Legazpi’s Commencement Exercises as Speaker

Legazpi City, Albay - The Mariners Polytechnic Colleges Foundation (MPCF) this city, held its 28th Ring Hop and Commencement Exercises simultaneously on April 11, 2014 at the JC Jimenez Multi-Purpose Gymnasium with Ms. Riina Vaher of the European-based Marlow Navigation shipping company as Guest of Honor and Speaker.

Officials of MPCF-Legazpi who were present during the occasion were Board of Trustees Members – Dr. Gabriel L. Jimenez, Dr. Marilissa J. Ampuan, MPCF-Legazpi Vice President for Students and External Affairs Nimfa V. Jimenez, EVP and VP for Financial Affairs Merle J. San Pedro and President Dante La. Jimenez.

In her address, the Speaker placed emphasies on the role of women in maritime industry worldwide. Having been a ship officer herself, she noted that women in maritime can be as effective as their male counterparts.


The scene at the graduation rites held at the JC Jimenez Multi-Purpose Gymnasium at the MPCF-Legazpi’s campus annex with the Candidates for Graduation and parents, relatives and friends of the members of the graduating batch in attendance.

She mentioned the importance of maritime education institutions like the Mariners Polytechnic Colleges Foundation which is able to cope with the demands of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) requirements when it comes to quality education and training of future seafarers.

“The qualification of maritime instructors as well as the updated training equipment of the school plus the positive attitude and hard work of students, all redound to an ideal ground which prepare future seafarers to be ready to cope with world-class standards asked by international shipping enterprises like Marlow Navigation of Europe” declared Ms. Vaher.

At 36 years old, the Guest Speaker is a veteran and experienced maritime officer who have actual stints in embarking in cargo ships which sailed in the high seas prior to her acceptance of a land-based job with the shipping enterprise where she works now.

Leading the more than 600 graduates are the achievers who are recipients of the top honors for the 2014 graduating batch both from the school’s land and sea-based courses are the following:

Meanwhile, as a manifestation of trust to the school and the acceptance of MPCF graduates to be part of the shipping company’s workforce, Marlow Navigation has recently started to recruit 200 Ordinary Seamen (O.S.) and Culinary Arts graduates from Mariners for immediate deployment for its various sea vessels plying the international routes.


Guests and relatives of the members of the 2014 graduating batch stroll and appreciate the sunset at the Albay Gulf (at the background) and the newly-constructed Training Swimming Pool with the orange-colored fully-enclosed life boat mounted on the Landship - MS Mariners’ adjacent to the venue where the graduation ceremony is being  held.

Aside from the ordinary seamen, the shipping firm also asked Mariners to provide them with Culinary Arts Supervisors and Cook-Trainees who will likewise embark on their ships abroad.

This demand from the school has strengthened the thrust of the institution to further make good its production of quality graduates so it can continue to register an impact to Bicolano families whose children are assured of high paying jobs after graduation.

“Economy-wise, the school’s alumni who make it to work abroad are able to register impact on their respective families in terms of converting their lifestyle and living standards to a dignified level because of better paying jobs they get after graduation”, declared MPCF President Dante La.
